How to send a Gmail email to Slack
You can share an email with your team without forwarding it or copy-pasting. With the Send to Slack add-on, the message and its attachments are posted to a Slack channel from Gmail, under your own name.
Step by step
- Open the email. In Gmail, open the message you want to share, then click the Send to Slack icon in the right-hand side panel.
- Connect Slack (first time only). Press Connect Slack and approve the permissions in your Slack workspace. The connection is stored encrypted and you can delete it at any time with Disconnect Slack.
- Choose a channel. Pick one of the public or private channels you belong to.
- Press Send to Slack. The subject, sender, date and quoted body are posted with the attachments. Long bodies are shortened to keep the channel readable.
What the Slack post looks like
The post shows the subject in bold, the sender, recipient and date, then the email body as a quote with its line breaks kept. Attachments are uploaded as Slack files in the same message. Because it is posted with your own Slack authorization, it carries your name and photo and you can edit or delete it later.
Good to know
- Attachments are limited to 15 MB in total per email. The add-on tells you before anything is sent if an email is above that.
- Only the email you have open is read, and only when you press Send. Nothing is stored.
- If your Slack connection expires or is revoked, the add-on asks you to reconnect.
Why not the official Slack app for Gmail?
Slack's own add-on posts through a bot, so the message is not from you and cannot be edited by you. Send to Slack posts as you, which is the main reason people use it.
